GB 1840 1d Black Cover with Certificate 1840, 1d Black pl. 4 "LF" with large margins tied to entire by a wonderful example of the EXTREMELY RARE "bistre brown" Maltese Cross of Newport, Isle of Wight. This is a well known and distinct variety. We have not seen any other examples on the market except for this. Provenance: from the famous gold medal "I.T. GB 1912-24 1/2D Green PlateBlock RPS Cert Royal Cypher 1/2d. G15 control block of 6 in a stunning and vivid "very deep bright yellow green". All stamps unmounted. This has to be seen to be appreciated. It is basically the 1/2d equivalent of the very rare 2d intense bright orange. We know of no other examples.
