GB 1840 1d Black Variety FRAUDULENTLY Re-Used Plate 5 "RF" with 4 good margins showing a cleared face, with traces of a pale orange red M.C. visible, overstruck by a crisp black M.C. The cleaning process has bleached out the Queen's Head - which is almost "albino". This is the reason for the change from penny black to penny red. The P.O. authorities carried out their own experiments to try & clean off the red maltese cross. This is a (successful) example of the "Postal Fraud" they were trying to avoid. A very important piece of philatelic History. With clear Brandon Certificate (2003). (pt) | £1850.00 | |
