GB 1840 2d Plate 1 V. RARE Violet Blue Shade VERY RARE VIOLET BLUE SHADE (SG DS2). Fine 4 margin example with wonderful deep colour of this extremely rare stamp. Only a handful are known, and this is without doubt one of the rarest of ALL VICTORIAN STAMPS. Cat £1500 4 years ago which is ridiculous – the example in the Wills sale (1989) fetched approx. £1800, and recently another example sold in a London auction for £1800 HAMMER PRICE. GB 1840 QV 2d Blue "PAIR" Plate 1 MAROON MX's Queen Victoria Pl.1 cancelled by 2 strikes of the very rare MAROON MALTESE CROSS. Big margins all round and 2 good strikes of this very scarce cross, listed in Alcock and Holland. The usual town of origin is Epsom, although other sources of maroon are known, mostly from Ireland.
