1943 Cover and letter from Australia to POW Malaya Undated Mid 1943 Pte F F Brightfield, HQ Coy 2/19th Battalion, (Band), General Base Depot A I F. The cover and letter from his mum is Australian Red Cross type Ae 3 (with c/o OFFICIAL PRISONERS OF WAR INFORMATION BUREAU totally obliterated and replaced with c/o JAPANESE RED CROSS SOCIETY in red). It has a Melbourne circular datestamp and parallel line cancellation. The inscription indicates it was received on 22nd May 1944. There is no Japanese censor mark. The diamond 3 PASSED BY CENSOR 168 in violet on the back and front is the Australian censor mark with the 3d by Censor resealing tape in red on the reverse. The cover is inscribed "Cha" in pencil. Fred Brightfield spent the 3 1/2 years of the captivity in Singapore, the last period from May 1944 in Changi Jail. (PT # 10)

1943 Malaya POW Card (Japan) addressed to Wales 23rd February 1943 Driver Arthur Tonge. It has the horizontal Japanese inscription reading FURYO YUBIN (Prisoner of War Post) but with no Sce DES PRISONNIERS DE GUERRE. The vertical script reads KEN ETSU ZUMI and MA REI . There is a faint Japanese censor han probable that of Shimogahara. It has a UK PASSED PW 4588. (pt # 3)

The cover from Queensland is Australian Red Cross type Ae 3 (with c/o OFFICIAL PRISONERS OF WAR INFORMATION BUREAU totally obliterated and replaced with c/o JAPANESE RED CROSS SOCIETY in red). It has no Australian postal marking but the inscription indicates it was received on 2nd April 1943. There is no visible Japanese marking. The square 3 PASSED BY CENSOR 376 in violet is the Australian censor mark with the 3d by Censor resealing tape in red on the reverse. The cover has no location makings. (PT # 8)

1943 Cover from England to Corps of Military Police 10th April 1943 L/Corporal Charles Johnson 18th Division Provost Company Singapore Malaya. The cover from Mrs Johnson has beenD BY EXAMINER 4484 in the UK and resealed using PC90 label. It has a Reigate & Redhill circular datestamp. There is no receipt date noted. It is marked "37" in pencil. And OL H 13 5 43 S Rd also in pencil. This indicates he was held at Sime Road at the time the letter was received and that he was sent with H Force to the Railway on 13th May 1943. He returned to Singapore, initially Sime Road in late Dec. 1943. Mail to F and H Force does not seem to have been forwarded to Thailand byt held in Singapore. There are no Japanese censor marks.

1943 P.O.W. Cover with letter to British Prisoner 25th May 1943 Percy Hawker Prisoner of War c/o Japanese Red Cross from England. This letter is from his wife Doris who had still not heard any news from him. Obviously the card sent on 20th June 1942 had still not arrived. It has UK PC90 resealing tapeD BY EXAMINER 2960 and a Birmingham cds. The inscription indicates it was received on 9th May 1944 11 1/2 months after mailing. It has a CHA in pencil inscribed by the BRE sorters. (PT #15).

1945 From Australia to Australian P.O.W. Malayan Camp 30th July 1945 Lieut B D Richardson 2/20th Battalion AIF Malaya. The cover from his family was mailed with two Mayfield NSW circular datestamps. It has a manuscript "RTA" (Return to addressee) in black ink. There is no Japanese censor mark. The cover possible never left Australis; it certainly never got into Japanese hands. The diamond 3 PASSED BY CENSOR 182 in violet is the Australian censor mark with the 3d by Censor resealing tape in red used to reseal after inspection. (PT # 23).

1944 from England to BR. P.O.W. Malaya Camps 19th August 1994 Lieutenant G P Guest addressed c/o The Malay Furyo Syuyosho Dai Iti Bunsho. This 3d P.O.W. Card from his wife Joan in Bristol, has a wavy line cancellation from Cleveland Somerset. It has an octagonal UK PASSED PW 9211 in red. There is no receipt date noted and no location marks. There is a feint rectangular japanese censor mark in violet measuring 21mm by 16mm with KEN ETSU ZUMI (Passed by Censor) Horizontally and the censor's han of Nakajima in violet measuring approx 10mm by 6mm. (pt # 21)
