GB 1840 QV 2d Blue "PAIR" Plate 1 MAROON MX's Queen Victoria Pl.1 cancelled by 2 strikes of the very rare MAROON MALTESE CROSS. Big margins all round and 2 good strikes of this very scarce cross, listed in Alcock and Holland. The usual town of origin is Epsom, although other sources of maroon are known, mostly from Ireland. Much rarer than magenta. Minor creasing is not visible from the front. This is the only example of maroon we have recorded on the 1840 2d. An important item. With PEGB Certificate.
