ANTIQUES
1

Antique - A pair of Chinese rank badges Reference 22/yns. A pair of embroidered rank badges. Qing dynasty. The fifth civil rank Silver Pheasant embroidered against clouds and buddhistic symbols. Some faults but attractive. 28.8 cms/11.5 inches wide. This type of badge, without waves, rocks or water, dates from the years immediately after the Reform movement of 1898, when the Guangxu emperor attempted to reform the government. The Dowager Empress CiXi had the emperor placed under detention and ordered the execution of the reform-minded officials who had aided him in this enterprise. These badges were thus produced for only a short period and consequently are comparitively scarce, particularly as pairs. A single badge of similar style is in the Yale University Art Gallery, the gift of Schulyer V. R. Cammann (#). (pt)   (ID:12553)

£650.00
2

Antique - Chinese Robe Reference 27/153. A woman's informal robe of woven silk. Early 20th century. Very little wear. (pt)   (ID:12551)

£550.00
3

Antique - Chinese Textile Reference P6. A kingfisher feather and hardstone head-dress. Decorated on black silk webbing (over a wire frame) with kingfisher feathers, semi-precious stones, glass and copper-gilt filigree. Some losses but a scarce item. Qing dynasty, 19th or early 20th century. 28cms/11 inches (please note that the illustration above shows the back of the crown. The front fits snugly around the top of the head and is plain). These fanciful 'crowns' were traditionally worn on special occasions. Their frail nature makes losses, particularly of the glued kingfisher feathers and peripheral ornaments, inevitable. Several different types exist - this shape is scarce and the nearest published example I can find is the example in the Newark (N.J.) Museum, the gift of Iris Barrel Apfel. This is illustrated and described in 'Chinese Costume at the end of the Qing dynasty' (Valrae Reynolds, 'Orientations' magazine, October 1992). Provenance: Sotheby's. (pt)   (ID:12552)

£4550.00

12

Antique - Japanese cloisonne Reference: 27/20. A Japanese cloisonne koro influenced by the shape of ancient Chinese bronzes. 19th century. Decorated with typical butterflies and unusually, on the lid with human figures, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian art (a piece of Japanese cloisonne with an apparent image of the jackal-headed Egyptian god Anubis is published). Some losses, but this is a large piece by the standards of the time and may have been a significant commission. Height 42.5 cms / 17 inches. (pt)   (ID:12562)

£1150.00
13

Antique - Indian sculpture A red sandstone figure of a donor or accolyte. circa 4th or 5th centuries. Very worn, hence price. 33.5 cm high. (pt)   (ID:12563)

Antique - Japanese lacquer Reference S14. A fine and attractive lacquer fubako. Of typical form, bearing a roiro-nuri ground and decorated with a berried nanten plant in shades of hiramakie and red lacquer; the interior in rich nashiji, the underside of the cover also decorated with ratten. The design continuing over the sides of the cover and on to the lower box (designed to match up with the cover). The gilt medal ring handles elaborately chased, probably with stylised mon. Late 18th or early 19th century. Length 25.7 cms. / 10.1 inches. In the treatment of the foliage comparisons may be made with the pair of 'famous boxes' (a suzuribako and ryoshibako) formerly in the Charles A. Greenfield collection (Metropolitan Museum exhibition catalogue, A. J. Pekarik, 1980, number 27), attributed to the 18th century. The design of the fubako is pleasing and the workmanship first-rate. (pt)   (ID:12565)

Antique - Japanese prints Reference 178. Utagawa Kunisada, signing 'Toyokuni III' and Hiroshige II. A triptych, dated 1865, being a night scene from a 'Tales of Genji' series. The figures by Kunisada, the landscape by Hiroshige II. Very attractive. Reasonable impressions and good colour, a little trimming and wrinkling. (pt)   (ID:12566)

£600.00

Antique - Japanese lacquer Reference E7. A lacquer box and cover, decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, takimaki-e, nashiji and kirigane with a rural scene, depicting houses by a stream amidst foliage. The design continuing over the sides, pewter rims. The interior in nashiji. Some faults including rubbing and loss to wooden rim section (not visible when lid is on box), but an attractive example of this luxurious type of ware - objects made for a wealthy domestic elite. In perfect condition this would be thousands of dollars. Edo period, circa late 18th/ early 19th century.104mm x 80mm x 48mm. (pt)   (ID:12570)
