An attractive lacquer fubako. Of typical form, bearing a roiro-nuri ground and decorated with a berried nanten plant in shades of hiramakie and red lacquer; the interior in rich nashiji, the underside of the cover also decorated with ratten. The design continuing over the sides of the cover and on to the lower box (designed to match up with the cover). The gilt medal ring handles elaborately chased, probably with stylised mon. Late 18th or early 19th century. Length 25.7 cms. / 10.1 inches.

In the treatment of the foliage comparisons may be made with the pair of 'famous boxes' (a suzuribako and ryoshibako) formerly in the Charles A. Greenfield collection (Metropolitan Museum exhibition catalogue, A. J. Pekarik, 1980, number 27), attributed to the 18th century. The design of the fubako is pleasing and the workmanship first-rate.

Price: U.S. $2095.
