Reference P11.
A bowl with decorations of numerous bats, in red and gold and grey, against a bright yellow background. 13.7 cms/5.4 inches diameter. Six character reign mark of Guangxu ) and probably of the period. Repair at top, hence price.
At first glance this appears to be one of the special patterns ordered for the wedding of the Tongzhi emperor in 1872. However the quality of the painting is perhaps not up to the highest standard so it may be that this is a later replacement for a broken piece, or indeed a piece for general sale. These wares are discussed in 'The Tongzhi Imperial Wedding Porcelain' by Ronald W. Langsdorf 'Orientations' magazine, October 1996, and a similar bowl is illustrated as fig. 22. Provenance: Christie's.

U.S. $195
