Japanese


A lacquer box and cover, decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, takimaki-e, nashiji and kirigane with a rural scene, depicting a house by a waterfall amidst pines and other foliage. The design continuing over the sides, pewter rims. The interior in nashiji. Some faults including a crack at top and nibbles to wooden rim section, but an attractive example of this luxurious type of ware - objects made for a wealthy domestic elite. In perfect condition this would be thousands of dollars.
Edo period, circa late 18th century.
